TOM Riley is heading back to Rodney Parade after signing for Newport from Cornish Pirates, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 31-year-old made a big impact with the Black and Ambers in 2008/9 after arriving from Cardiff Blues.

He scored 11 tries in 27 appearances that campaign, forming an excellent partnership with Scott Williams, and his exploits earned the then carpet fitter a professional contract with Newport Gwent Dragons the following season.

Riley made 60 appearances for the region before heading for Penzance in 2012, becoming a valued member of the Pirates' squad.

He passed 100 appearances for the Cornishmen last season and his contribution to rugby in the area was marked by him being named community player of the year at the Pirates' awards.

Craig Warlow believes Riley can help further develop a Newport back line that showed signs of real promise in 2015/16.

"I am really pleased for the rest of the squad that someone of Tom's experience, ability and personality is coming in and adding to the good work that's gone on so far," he said.

"Tom will be a great addition to all aspects of running a semi-pro, aspirational rugby team. I know that everyone is very excited about the new season and Tom is working hard with the rest of the squad to get prepared for September."

Champions Ebbw Vale have announced another batch of re-signings with flanker Rhys Clarke, the players' player of the year in the title-winning campaign, scrum-half Chris Thomas and prop Lloyd Bridges penning fresh deals at Eugene Cross Park.

Earlier in the week experienced props Gethin Robinson and Ian George plus locks Josh Jacas and Joe Bartlett committed to 2016/17 with the Steelmen.
