CAERPHILLY boss Brett Davey says Matthew Nuthall's experience will be invaluable in helping the next generation of players flourish at the club – and expects the wing to also provide a spark on the field after signing from Pontypridd.

The 32-year-old has moved to Virginia Park from Sardis Road as a player-coach, joining the management team that features head coach Davey, director of rugby Christian Ferris, Gareth Short and Matthew Lewis.

Nuthall has a vast amount of experience after helping Pontypridd become the standard bearers for the Principality Premiership and is relishing the chance to pass on some of his knowledge at Caerphilly, who finished fifth in Division Three East A last season.

He said: "I've been looking for a player coaching role for the last few months but didn't want to just jump in anywhere it had to be somewhere which had ambition and drive to push on and not just be content with staying in the same league.

"Once Brett and Chris got in touch to see if I was interested in coming on board as a player coach to help Caerphilly climb back up the leagues I knew almost instantly it was the right choice."

Davey was signed to hold the reins at Virginia Park earlier in the month and believes Nuthall is a perfect fit.

The former Ponty full-back said: "I am delighted to be working with Matthew again. Once we found out that he wanted to go into coaching it was a logical move for us.

"He has a wealth of experience as a player and I am sure the players will learn a lot from him. He will also be available to play and that is where I am sure players will learn the most."

The Cheesemen will have a players meeting next Thursday before reconvening for pre-season training on July 5.
