CEFN Fforest’s Robbie Regan welcomes his Welsh fans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his world title success with him in Cardiff this Saturday.

Regan beat champion Daniel Jimenez to claim the WBO world bantamweight title from the Puerto Rican star at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff in April 1996.

Aged 27 he had the world at his feet but illness and a failed brain scan meant he never fought again.

The intervening years have been tough for Regan but at 48 he’s happy to celebrate his achievements with a special event at The All Nations Centre in Sachville Avenue, Cardiff, on Saturday evening.

“I don’t look at bad memories, I try to look at the positives,” said Regan, who is now coaching young boxers in Cefn Fforest.

“It’s 20 years since I became world champion and I really want to celebrate my biggest night in boxing with my fans and friends.

“The fans made my fight nights electric and a little piece of the title belongs to them.”

The evening will feature a dinner followed by an appearance by former Wales rugby international Garin Jenkins and highlights of Regan’s career on the big screen, including his unanimous points win over Jimenez and an amateur bout against Joe Calzaghe.

“Current world champion Lee Selby is hoping to be there, along with his brother Andrew,” added Regan.

“And Steve Robinson and Nicky Piper will be there as well so it should be a great night.

“We’ve already done a celebration dinner in Monte Carlo and the Prince of Monaco invited me to an after-party.

“That was an incredible experience but celebrating with my fans in Wales will be even better.”
