RSPCA Cymru is appealing for information and warning pet owners to be cautious following reports of cats being poisoned in Risca.

Deputy chief inspector Emma Smith is investigating the incidents on Ty Isaf Park Road in Risca.

“Sadly the caller has lost two cats to suspected poisonings. Both cats - one a five-year-old tabby and the other an eight-year-old ginger cat - were sadly put to sleep on veterinary advice after both returned home on different days with the same symptoms, where they were not able to stand,” she said.

“If anyone has any information, please get in touch. We would also like to warn cat owners in the area to be vigilant.”

Poisoning a cat deliberately is a criminal offence. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for those found guilty of this offence is up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £20,000.

If anyone has any information about these or similar incidents, they are urged to contact the RSPCA inspector information line on 0300 123 8018. Calls will be treated in confidence.

Some of the signs of poisoning are: Vomiting, seeming depressed/sleepy, appearing drunk and uncoordinated, seizures and difficulty breathing.

The RSCPCA give this advice for cat owners:

Be extra vigilant, check the health of your cats regularly

Know the signs and symptoms of poisoning and seek veterinary help immediately should any be seen,

The sooner the cat receives veterinary treatment

The better chances of survival
