FIVE of Caerphilly county borough’s parks have retained their Green Flag status, it has been announced this week.

Parc Cwm Darran, Cwmcarn Forest, Morgan Jones Park, Nelson Wern Park and Waunfawr Park Crosskeys all retained their Green Flag status, which recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces in the country, as well as helping to drive up the quality of green space.

Cllr Nigel George, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “This really is excellent news, and is a testament to the continuous hard work of our staff, partners and others to make the parks and open spaces the best they can possibly be. The summer holidays are now upon us, so it is an ideal time for residents and visitors to our county borough to sample all that their local park has to offer.

In addition, St Catherine’s Church Garden and the Roger Lewis Woodland Garden were granted ‘Green Flag Community Awards’, thanks to local volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain high standards and great facilities.

The Green Flag Award is a UK-wide partnership, delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy. This year, 70 parks and 40 community managed green spaces across Wales have been awarded recognition for their excellent facilities, as well as their commitment to delivering great quality green space for local communities.

Lucy Prisk, KWT Green Flag Coordinator, said: “Green Flag Award is a prestigious award for the best parks and green spaces. It’s great to see so many local authorities and volunteers in Wales striving for the best possible standards, contributing to tourism and the economy of Wales”.
